WHAT IS PROPOSITION 65?
Proposition 65, officially known as the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is a California law that requires businesses to provide warnings about significant exposures to chemicals that cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm.
The law requires California to maintain and publish a list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity. This list, which must be updated at least once a year, currently includes over 900 chemicals.
OUR COMMITMENT TO SAFETY
At Variable Objects, we are committed to the safety of our customers and the responsible manufacturing of our products. We take the following measures to ensure product safety:
RoHS Compliant Components
We use components and materials that comply with the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. RoHS restricts the use of specific hazardous materials found in electrical and electronic products, including lead, mercury, cadmium, and other harmful substances.
WHY WE DISPLAY THIS WARNING
Even though we use RoHS-compliant materials, we display the Proposition 65 warning to comply with California law. There are several reasons for this:
- Precautionary Compliance: Proposition 65 has very low threshold levels for warnings—often much lower than federal safety standards. Many products that are considered safe under federal law still require Prop 65 warnings.
- Trace Elements: Some materials may contain trace amounts of listed chemicals that are far below levels considered harmful, but still require disclosure under the law.
- Manufacturing Processes: 3D printing processes involve various materials that, while safe in their final form, may require disclosure due to the broad scope of Proposition 65.
- Legal Compliance: We choose to provide warnings rather than conduct extensive chemical testing for every product, which is a common and legally acceptable approach.
SAFE USE OF OUR PRODUCTS
Our products are designed for normal consumer use as fashion accessories. When used as intended, our products pose no known health risks. To ensure safe use:
- Use products as intended—as fashion accessories and carry items
- Do not ingest or place products in your mouth
- Keep products away from children under 14 years of age
- Wash hands after handling if desired
- Do not burn or incinerate products
UNDERSTANDING PROP 65 WARNINGS
It's important to understand that a Proposition 65 warning does not necessarily mean a product is unsafe. The warning is required when a product contains any amount of a listed chemical, regardless of the actual risk level.
According to the California Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA):
"The fact that a product bears a Proposition 65 warning does not mean by itself that the product is unsafe. The warning simply provides information to allow consumers to make informed decisions."
