HOW THIS IS MADE
Every Variable Objects piece is generated through parametric code, 3D printed in-house, and finished by hand. The same six steps produce every artifact, from the first prototype to the final numbered edition.
- 01DESIGN
Parametric generation
Every piece begins as a rule set in code — not a sketch. Geometry, panel articulation, hex pattern density, and seam logic are generated parametrically and can be re-tuned and re-run. The bag is the resolved output of a system, not a drawn shape.
- 02SLICE
Machine planning
The generated mesh is sliced into machine-ready toolpaths for the specific printer being used. Dual-color runs are planned so filament transitions land where the geometry hides them. Multi-material logic is part of the design, not an afterthought.
- 03PRINT
PLA onto power mesh
PLA panels are printed directly onto a power mesh fabric backing. The mechanical bond between rigid polymer and flexible mesh creates a panel stronger than either material alone. Single-color runs use the Bambu Lab P1S; dual-color colorways are produced on the H2D, which handles both filaments simultaneously.
- 04FINISH
Hand post-processing
Every printed panel is finished by hand: supports removed, edges cleaned, panel-to-mesh bond inspected. Print lines, layer geometry, and seams are not hidden — they are part of the look.
- 05ASSEMBLE
Hardware and lining
Panels are joined into the final form. TPU lining is fitted to the interior. Metal hardware is installed for durability and structure. The magnetic closure is set and tested.
- 06NUMBER
QC and edition logging
Every finished piece is inspected and logged against its numbered edition. When the edition sells out, that specific colorway is retired and not reprinted.
Ops protocols
Manufacturing
We reject mass production in favor of mass customization.
Every Variable Object is home-manufactured via our internal print farm on Bambu Lab P1S and H2D printers. We embrace the friction between math and material.
Hybrid protocol
Our tech and code are the language of the digital commons.
Open-source design philosophy. Proprietary methodology. Artifacts are the crystallization of our thoughts — one of a kind, generated by rules.
Data sovereignty
Aggressive anti-surveillance. We do not track, pixel, or sell your digital exhaust.
You possess the Right to Vanish. Upon request, we execute a Burn Notice on your data.
Common questions
- How are Variable Objects bags made?
- Each panel is generated parametrically in code, sliced for additive manufacturing, and 3D printed in-house on Bambu Lab P1S and H2D printers. PLA is printed directly onto a power mesh fabric backing, then hand-assembled with TPU lining, metal hardware, and a magnetic closure.
- What 3D printers are used?
- Bambu Lab P1S and Bambu Lab H2D. We choose the printer based on the design — the H2D handles two filaments simultaneously, which we use for dual-color colorways.
- Why hexagons?
- The hexagonal lattice distributes force evenly across every panel — maximum structural strength with minimum material. It is the same logic insects use for hives. Geometry doing the work.
- Are the bags hand-finished?
- Yes. Every printed panel is post-processed by hand, assembled with hardware, fitted with lining, and inspected before shipping. The 3D printer is treated as a creative collaborator — humans handle every piece before it goes out.
- How long does it take to make one bag?
- Print time per bag runs many hours per panel set, then several more hours of post-processing, assembly, and quality control. Because every piece is made in-house in small numbered editions, scarcity is a function of throughput, not artificial limits.
- Are the colorways limited editions?
- Yes. Most colorways are produced in numbered editions. When an edition sells out, that specific colorway is retired and not reprinted. Edition sizes are listed on each product page.
